Clean Slates
The rain
Lays its paintings on the pavement
In the mist of Monday morning
As I wade
Across an ocean made of light
The daemons I thought dead were merely hiding
In the basement of my soul
What do you know?
And the voices in my head they still remember
All the stories they once told
Can your sky be my heaven
Can your chance be my fate
I’m not looking for a savior
I just really need a break
Can your sky be my heaven
Can your chance be my fate
I’m not looking for redemption
Just a somewhat cleaner slate
The past
So easily forgotten
In the wake of new beginnings
As I came
I saw and I ignored
If the daemons I thought dead are here to linger
Will we wind up making friends
In the end
As the memories of regret are slowly weathered
Will they return in present tense?
Can your sky be my heaven
Can your chance be my fate
I’m not looking for a savior
I just really need a break
Can your sky be my heaven
Can your chance be my fate
I’m not looking for redemption
Just a somewhat cleaner slate

Barbara
Barbara, I have been waiting
Here outside your door
And I’m fairly sure you hear me
Even on the second floor
I’ve been knocking, I’ve been ringing
Hell, I’m calling you right now
But if you don’t let me in
This is how it’s going down
I’m gonna stand here screaming Barbara
I don’t care if people stare at me
I’m gonna stand here screaming Barbara
Howling at your balcony
I’m gonna stand here screaming Barbara
How I hope that that’s your name
Barbara, my memory’s blurry
But I recall just how we met
And I do remember thinking
You can’t make up a name like that
Things would be a little easier
Could I yell a nicer name
At least there’s grace in shouting Juliette
Michelle or Valerie
Instead I stand here screaming Barbara
I don’t care if people stare at me
I’m gonna stand here screaming Barbara
Howling at your balcony
I’m gonna stand here yelling Barbara
How I hope that that’s your name

Driggs & North 11

You know where to find me
I’m still at Driggs and North 11
In what used to be our sanctuary
Our hideout from the crowds
There’s really not much left of our
Secret little heaven
I’ve been renting out the bedroom
And I’m sleeping on the couch
I’m calling everyone I know
To bring a hammer and a hatchet
We’re gonna tear this place apart
And when we stripped it to the bones
And there’s nothing left here standing
Maybe that’s a brand new start
Today this place is just a place
Just as the street is just a street
McCarren Park is just a park
And even I am only me
Perhaps a brand new coat of paint
Will make the walls a little whiter
I’m gonna paint the ceiling too
And when I’m done with all the grey
I’ll paint the sun a little brighter
And the skies in deeper blue

Frequency

Frequency
Word after word is pouring
From mouth after mouth
Through the clanking of glasses
An echoing crowd
Voice upon voice is hanging
Like fog in the air
And as if underwater
It rings in my ears
But you
You send on my frequency
Your signal is reaching me
Through all of this white noise
You send on my frequency
Everyone talks, you see
Yet I only hear your voice
In between changing channels
Where transmissions collide
You’re a message
I read between the lines
Through the maze of the murmur
As the sea comes apart
In the void of it all
You’re a light in the dark
But you
You send on my frequency
Your signal is reaching me
Through all of this white noise
You send on my frequency
Everyone talks, you see
Yet I only hear your voice
Everyone talks
It goes round and round
We fight fire with fire, going sound for sound
It can’t be only me who feels this way
Everyone talks
And we say so very little
A single white noise and I’m drowning in the middle
It’s hard to tell the fire from the hay

Lego

You took my heart
And you peeled it like an orange
And you sucked the life out of everything I do
I should've known from the start
Not it's too late to whine about it
But there's still one thing I'd like to say to you
I hope you step on a lego
You heard me right
I hope your headphones break
At the very start of an eleven-hour flight
I hope you step on a lego
You heard me right
I hope you're haunted by a hated song
That keeps you up all night
Oh, mark my words
They’re the last ones I will give you
And, yes, I hope you do appreciate
The eloquence
Of the poetry you left me
There’s really not much else I wanna say
I hope you step on a lego
You heard me right
I hope your headphones break
At the very start of an eleven-hour flight
I hope you step on a lego
You heard me right
I hope you're haunted by a hated song
That keeps you up all night

Adrift by Design
There goes my summer
Here comes my rain
I’ve seen it before
It is always the same
There goes my summer
Here comes my rain
I’ve been here before
I will be here again
Ain’t no use fighting
The forces at play
Like driftwood the seasons
Will wash us away
We’re adrift by design
The tide of the times
Will keep pulling the sand out from under our feet
We’re adrift by design
The tide of the times
Will wash away every foothold we’re trying to keep
So I watch my summer
make room for the rain
I’d try to hold on
But I know it’s in vain
We’re adrift by design
The tide of the times
Will keep pulling the sand out from under our feet
We’re adrift by design
The tide of the times
Will wash away every foothold we’re trying to keep

Radiator
There must be something in the air
Or god knows where
That got my head spinning
There must be something in the air
Or god knows where
That got me dizzy as I am
There’s a fire in my mind
It sets the place alight
So please just keep it burning
There’s a fire in my head
That wakes me from the dead
As clearly I’m asleep
You radiate
You radiate
Like an insult
Like an insult to the sun
Can I orbit you
For a little while
Cause I think I’ve just
I think I’ve just begun
There must be something in the way
You brighten up the day
That draws me to your atmosphere
And I don’t know what it is
But I know there is a force
To which I gravitate
You radiate
You radiate
Like an insult
Like an insult to the sun
Can I orbit you
For a little while
Cause I think I’ve just
Yeah, I think I’ve just begun

To the Rescue
See the morning
Comes so well
To the rescue
Rings a bell
May the morning
May the sea
Set me straight and
Set me free
My heart is full my head is empty
I couldn’t run ‘em at the same time
I follow where my legs will lead
My heart is full my head is empty
I couldn’t run ‘em at the same time
Where I go is where I’ll be
To the morning
To my friend
Will I ever
Come again
My heart is full my head is empty
I couldn’t run ‘em at the same time
I follow where my legs will lead
My heart is full my head is empty
I couldn’t run ‘em at the same time
Where I go is where I’ll be

Homesick

Homesick
I feel like lately
We’ve been waiting
For something
Worth our time
We wait for revelations
A reason
Or a rhyme
We rattle
Every doorknob
In hallways
That won’t end
Searching
Always searching
Our quest for
Relevance
Lately the hole in my heart
Takes the shape of
A song I don’t know
I’ve been homesick for somewhere
Somewhere that I’ve yet to go
I wanna set my
Fuse on fire
And watch it
Closing in
In great anticipation
For something
To begin
Lately the hole in my heart
Takes the shape of
A song I don’t know
I’ve been homesick for somewhere
Somewhere that I’ve yet to go

Speed of Sound
Take my hand
I've got a bit of a secret
And if you promise you’ll keep it
I wanna share it with you
You and I
Could be the start of a movement
If we just follow the grovement
It doesn’t take more than two
Tell me why
Take our time
Why wait for signs
While we could run at the speed of sound
I’ll go by your side
If you go by mine
Until our feet won’t touch the ground
At the speed of sound
Don’t look down
We only keep getting higher
I’m not as frequent a flyer
But I will figure it out
We’ll be fine
I wanna be your MacGyver
Maybe your Lady Godiva
Ain’t noone stopping us now
Tell me why
Take our time
Why wait for signs
While we could run at the speed of sound
I’ll go by your side
If you go by mine
Until our feet won’t touch the ground
At the speed of sound

I Wish
I wish I was a dancer
I'd take you out tonight
I'd spin you round and around and around
Anyway you like
I wish I was a painter
A really good one, too
And all the great galleries
Would carry paintings of you
If at least I was a rich guy
I'd buy you fancy things
Instead of dinner at home
I would fly you to Rome
For a drink
I wish I was every man you want
And every man you need
But I'm afraid I'm only good at being me

Into Place
I don’t know where
To begin
Out of nowhere
I have been
Contemplating
Help me out
I need a thought to
Think out loud
You come along
With a heart full of songs
And a head full of melodies
You come along
And it all falls into place
I gave half my
Words away
For only one good
Thing to say
In fact, I guess I’d
Trade them all
For one good writing
On the wall
You come along
With a heart full of songs
And a head full of melodies
You come along
And it all falls into place

The Frank & The Earnest Brussels, Belgium
The Frank & The Earnest is a band from Germany, combining the energy of alternative rock with the drive of dirty soul. In December 2020, the group releases their new album: Sincerely. The band weaves catchy rock vocals into complex jazzy harmonies, carried by a stomping rhythm section that channels the groove of retro hip hop, making for shaking butts even through the album’s down-beat moments. ... more
